FBISE stands for the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Islamabad. It is the official Pakistani government education board that conducts Matric (Grade 9-10) and FSc (Grade 11-12) examinations. FBISE certificates are the standard qualification for university admissions across Pakistan, including medical colleges, engineering universities, and general universities.
Cambridge International Education (CIE) offers the O-Level, A-Level, and IGCSE qualifications. These are globally recognised qualifications developed by the University of Cambridge. Cambridge qualifications are accepted by universities in over 160 countries including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and also Pakistan.
• Language of Instruction — FBISE is in Urdu and English. Cambridge is primarily in English, beneficial for international university goals.
• Exam Style — FBISE exams are knowledge-based requiring strong memorisation. Cambridge exams are analytical and skills-based.
• Subject Range — FBISE has a fixed set of subjects. Cambridge offers 70+ subjects with more flexibility.
• University Recognition in Pakistan — Both are recognised. FBISE is directly used for MDCAT and ECAT. Cambridge is also accepted.
• International Recognition — Cambridge wins here. O-Level and A-Level are directly accepted by UK, US, and global universities.
• Cost — FBISE programmes are generally more affordable. Cambridge has slightly higher exam registration fees.
Choose FBISE if: Your family plans to return to Pakistan, your child wants MBBS or engineering in Pakistan, budget is a consideration, or your child is more comfortable with Urdu alongside English.
Choose Cambridge if: Your family is not sure where you will settle long term, your child wants to apply to international universities, you want global academic skills developed, or your child is comfortable with English as primary medium.
At Lumina Global School, we offer both FBISE and Cambridge curricula under one roof. Your child can start on one path and switch to the other without losing any academic progress. This dual curriculum approach is unique to Lumina and is specifically designed for Pakistani families abroad who need maximum flexibility.
A: Not simultaneously, but at Lumina you can switch between the two pathways at any point without losing your academic year.
A: Yes. Cambridge O-Level is accepted as equivalent to Matric. For FSc equivalence, A-Level results go through the IBCC equivalence process.
A: Both are accepted. However Cambridge A-Level students often find the analytical skills developed very helpful for competitive university entrance tests.
A: This depends on your family's long term plans. If staying abroad and wanting global options, Cambridge is better. If returning to Pakistan soon, FBISE is safer. Our admissions counsellors at Lumina can guide you personally.
