EYFS stands for Early Years Foundation Stage. It is the official early childhood education framework developed by the United Kingdom's Department for Education. It sets the standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to 5 years old in England, and has become widely adopted by international and online schools around the world as the gold standard for early years education.
At Lumina Global School, our KG-1 and KG-2 programme follows the British EYFS curriculum, enriched with Urdu language, Islamic Studies, and Pakistani cultural values. This combination gives Pakistani children abroad the best of both worlds: internationally recognised early education and a strong connection to their roots.
The British EYFS framework is used by quality international and online schools worldwide for several strong reasons:
• Research-Based — EYFS is built on decades of child development research. It is not just a list of topics to cover but a framework for how young children learn best.
• Holistic Development — EYFS focuses on the whole child — not just academic knowledge but physical development, emotional wellbeing, social skills, and creativity.
• Play-Based Learning — EYFS recognises that young children learn most effectively through play, exploration, and hands-on experience. This keeps learning enjoyable and deeply effective.
• International Recognition — EYFS-trained children transition smoothly into schools in the UK, Pakistan, UAE, and most other countries because the foundational skills developed are universally valued.
• Parent Partnership — EYFS explicitly builds in a strong role for parents in their child's learning, which is particularly valuable in an online school setting.
The British EYFS framework organises child development into seven areas of learning, divided into three prime areas and four specific areas.
The Three Prime Areas (most critical for young children):
• Communication and Language — Listening, understanding, and speaking. Children develop vocabulary, follow instructions, express themselves clearly, and engage in conversations. At Lumina this is developed in both English and Urdu.
• Physical Development — Fine motor skills (drawing, writing, cutting, building) and gross motor skills (movement, coordination, body awareness). Our online KG incorporates daily physical activities even in the virtual classroom.
• Personal, Social, and Emotional Development — Building self-confidence, managing emotions, forming relationships, and developing independence. In our KG programme, group activities and collaborative tasks develop these skills daily.
The Four Specific Areas (build on the prime areas):
• Literacy — Phonics, reading, and early writing skills. Children learn to recognise letters, blend sounds, read simple words and sentences, and begin writing.
• Mathematics — Number recognition, counting, simple addition and subtraction, shapes, patterns, and measurement through hands-on and visual activities.
• Understanding the World — Exploring the natural and built environment, learning about people, places, technology, and the world around them. At Lumina this includes Pakistan's geography, culture, and history at an age-appropriate level.
• Expressive Arts and Design — Drawing, painting, music, dance, drama, and creative play. These develop imagination, fine motor skills, and emotional expression.
One of the most distinctive features of Lumina Global School's KG program is the integration of British EYFS standards with Pakistani cultural and Islamic values. This is not a compromise — it is a strength.
Urdu Language is taught as a compulsory subject alongside English. Native Urdu-speaking teachers ensure your child develops fluency in their mother tongue from the very beginning. Islamic Studies is woven throughout the EYFS framework — children learn duas, Islamic values, and stories from Islamic history in an age-appropriate, engaging way. Pakistani cultural celebrations including Independence Day, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha are part of the school calendar and are celebrated with activities and discussions that help children understand and take pride in their heritage.
A common question parents ask is whether the play-based, hands-on EYFS approach can truly be replicated in an online setting. The answer at Lumina is yes — through careful design and experienced early years teachers.
Our online KG sessions use colourful interactive presentations, digital manipulatives for mathematics, virtual storytime for literacy, show-and-tell activities where children share objects from home, group games and songs that develop language and social skills, and teacher-guided craft activities using simple materials at home. The 1:8 teacher to student ratio ensures every child receives individual attention and no one is left behind.
• Read to your child daily in both English and Urdu. Even 10 minutes a day builds vocabulary and a love of reading.
• Practice number recognition together using everyday objects — counting fruits, toys, or steps.
• Encourage your child to draw and colour regularly to develop fine motor skills for writing.
• Teach basic duas together. Even very young children absorb duas quickly when they are part of daily family routines.
• Set up a small dedicated learning space at home before school starts to help your child associate that space with learning and focus.
A: KG-1 is designed for children aged 4 to 5. Children should be at least 4 years old at the start of the academic year to enroll in KG-1.
A: This depends on your child's readiness. Our admissions team will conduct a simple readiness assessment to place your child in the most appropriate level for their development.
A: EYFS is a developmental framework, not a formal qualification. Children who complete EYFS-based KG are prepared to enter Grade 1 in any international or Pakistani school worldwide.
A: Basic stationery including crayons, pencils, scissors, and paper are used for some activities. Your school will provide a materials list at the start of each term. No expensive equipment is required.
